What To Expect From Arlington Senior Care

By Marissa Velazquez

There are many levels of involvement when looking at Arlington senior care options. The level required depends on the person who will be the recipient of the attention being given. The choices range from non-medical in home assistance to twenty four hour daily attendance by certified medical personnel. To determine what level is best for your needs most facilities and services will administer a questionnaire designed to help with that decision.

In home non-medical assistance is the most common service available. The people who do this work are trained to help with household chores, do the shopping, run errands and the like. They are not qualified to do anything associated with medications, wound cleansing, or treatments that typically would be done by a specialist.

Many older adults attend an adult day center on a regular basis. The participants are not generally incapacitated but may have some mental health or physical impairment. The centers usually supply transportation to pick up the clients and bring them back home when the center closes. The center should have a social director who organizes activities for clients on a daily basis.

One of the higher levels of support for elders would be a live-in nurse or an in home nurse who works in shifts that give maximum attention for the client during day light hours and up to the client retires for the night. The live in nurse would naturally be in the home on a full time basis and would be responsible for all needs of the client. They should be able to assist with bathing, eating, walking and any medical duties such as shots or wound care.

The next level will be an assisted living facility. In this type of housing all of the client's ADL's are handled. The resident dines in the common area dining room and all housekeeping duties are tended to for them. There are buses that will take them to the doctor and shopping each week. There are beauty shops on the premises for resident use and a social director to help everyone stay active and connected.

If a resident of an assisted living facility begins to have serious memory problems or starts to wander away from the property at inappropriate times most properties have extended care and memory wings to help keep them safe. This is part of the aging in place package that is offered. Once they are settled into the property they never have to move away but instead simply change rooms or floors.

There are also hospice facilities that are independent of other affiliations. The Medicare system pays for six months of hospice support for persons who have cancer or other terminal diseases and have been given six months to live. Some hospice services come to the home of the patient while other services have their own facilities. If your loved one is at home during this time the support nurse will come there and relieve you for several hours so you can have some respite from the daily work of caring for your family member.

You will find a wide variety of services when you look at Arlington senior care options. There are many levels of support available and all are accessible to all of the senior population in the city. Those who wish to remain in independent housing can do so and those who prefer the security of assisted living are able to access that just as easily.
